These cigars were initially conceived in Honduras. Their distinctly strong aroma appealed to many aficionados who liked to enjoy something a bit more robust.
This brand was launched in Germany in the early 2000s by the former Liberty Cigar Company under the slogan “VIVA LA LIBERTAD – for freethinkers, idealists, and epicures.” It subsequently found its way into the sales department of the El Mundo del Tabaco company, which is part of Villiger Söhne GmbH.
Ultimately, LA LIBERTAD was added to the Villiger HANDMADE cigar portfolio after integrating the EL Mundo Del Tabaco HANDMADE cigars. In Germany, the brand is sold by Villiger Söhne GmbH and in Switzerland by Villiger Söhne AG.
The original LA LIBERTAD developed an earthy, spicy aroma due to its dark wrapper and strong Honduran binder and filler. The original manufacturer of this series was Nestor Plasencia in Danlí, El Paraíso, Honduras.
With the decision by Villiger in Nicaragua – more precisely, in the heart of the Nicaraguan cigar industry, in Estelí – to build its own cigar factory under the name VILLIGER DE NICARAGUA, the production of LA LIBERTAD will move from Honduras to Nicaragua.
The plan was to develop the “new” La Libertad primarily with Nicaraguan tobaccos. On the one hand, the origin of the brand should still be recognizable. On the other hand, in keeping with the spirit of the times, we wanted to break new ground, particularly regarding the choice of format. Thus, we had no intention of breaking with tradition but identified the need to follow trends.
La Libertad uses a Criollo wrapper from Nicaragua and a binder from the Cibao Valley in the Dominican Republic. The combination of Nicaraguan fillers, Seco Jalapa, Viso Esteli, and Ligero Esteli, has resulted in a blend that meets the highest smoking standards.
The result after numerous tests is a cigar with a body in the Medium + range, a multi-faceted flavor profile, in harmony with a multitude of nuances. The flavor is robust and well-rounded, infused with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, spices, and caramel.
We have reduced the six formats originally available for the previous LA LIBERTAD to three to better reflect the current needs of aficionados. In this spirit, we have introduced a Grand Toro format.
Corona measures 146 mm in length and 17.07 mm in diameter (5¾ x 43).
Robusto measures 127 mm in length and 20.64 mm in diameter (5 x 52).
Gran Toro measures 152 mm in length and 21.43 mm in diameter (6 x 54).
All three formats of LA LIBERTAD will be available in completely newly designed elegant book-shaped boxes of 20. This attractive and innovative packaging form also draws attention to the distinctiveness of this brand.
We have kept the red, black, and white color scheme of La Libertad to ensure instant recognition.
The modern and bold design of the novel packaging fits the image of the new LA LIBERTAD perfectly and will make this cigar a real eye-catcher in the humidor.
The band has also been given a completely new look. A bright red background is framed by gold/black bands. Each format also has an additional black/gold band at the foot.
The former slogan “VIVA LA LIBERTAD” will remain a part of the brand identity. “Upholding freedom, liberty, and independence.”
That is the promise the cigar manufacturer VILLIGER DE NICARAGUA makes for the premium handmade cigars to highlight the completely redesigned look of the LA LIBERTAD brand.
The new LA LIBERTAD will soon be available in Europe, overseas, and the USA.
At Villiger, we are confident that the “new La Libertad” will appeal not only to curious smokers of full-bodied dark Nicaraguan “beauties” but also to the many loyal LA LIBERTAD smokers without whom the brand’s success over the past 20 years would not have been possible.
