Quality does not happen by chance – it is the result of experience, care, and a trained eye for detail. Behind every cigar and cigarillo are people who dedicate themselves to ensuring that every single step is done right.

We spoke with our longtime employee Ramona from Quality Assurance and gained fascinating insights into her daily work – into an area that is essential for enjoyment, yet often remains behind the scenes.

Dear Ramona, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions. How long have you been working at VILLIGER, and how did you end up in Quality Assurance?
With pleasure. I have now been working at VILLIGER for 29 years. In fact, my connection to the company started very early, as both of my parents also worked here. After completing my apprenticeship as a hairdresser, I was unable to find a suitable position and therefore started working in production at VILLIGER. Among other things, I worked on “braiding VILLIGER ORIGINAL-KRUMME (similar to VILLIGER CULEBRA).” After three years, a new opportunity came up: due to the retirement of an employee, a position in Quality Assurance became available. I took the opportunity and eventually moved into Quality Assurance, where I still work today.

What does a typical workday in Quality Assurance look like?
My workday is very diverse. I take samples from production, carry out measurements, and inspect product quality. Quality is checked at various stages throughout the production process. In addition, I handle complaints and take care of incoming material inspections. I also prepare samples for new products.

What makes a “perfect” cigar or cigarillo for you?
For me, it is the fundamentals that matter most: a good draw, a pleasant aroma, an even burn, and clean, attractive craftsmanship. When all these factors come together, the result is a balanced and harmonious smoking experience.

How do you ensure consistent quality across large production volumes?
Quality is continuously monitored – not only by Quality Assurance, but also directly within production itself. Regular spot checks are carried out there as well, for example for draw resistance. Still, we must never forget: a cigar is and always will be a natural product. Years of experience are an enormous advantage here. Especially with our handmade cigars, quality assurance is challenging because every format requires a different draw resistance value.

What are the biggest challenges, and how do you deal with quality deviations?
The biggest challenge in quality assurance is that cigars are natural products – even the smallest changes can have noticeable effects on quality. That makes it all the more important to react quickly whenever deviations occur. We identify the cause as fast as possible and correct it in a targeted way to ensure the consistent quality our customers expect.

How has quality assurance changed over the years?
From a machinery perspective, comparatively little has changed in recent years. What has changed significantly, however, is the variety of products and manufacturing methods. This growing complexity creates new demands that can only be mastered through teamwork.

What are you particularly proud of in your work?
I am especially proud of the many products I have had the opportunity to contribute to over the years. It is always a highlight to finally hold the finished product in your hands.

Dear Ramona, thank you very much for giving us an insight into your work. Finally, we would love to know: what is your favorite product?
My favorite product is the CONSTELLATION CAIPIRINHA (only available in Switzerland). A little fun fact: during the first product tests, real lime juice was actually used.
